Undertow Story School

Undertow Story School

Undertow Story School exists to disrupt the exclusivity of the British literary world. Where institutions provide prestigious (and expensive) routes into publishing, our mission is to offer the same calibre of training and opportunity - but exclusively to those who are too often excluded.

Our school is designed for migrants from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds. We believe storytelling has the power to transform both individual lives and the national narrative around migration. By centring these voices, we aim to foster personal healing while challenging public perception and widening access to the arts sector.

Refugees and asylum seekers are disproportionately likely to be journalists, campaigners, writers, and other truth-tellers - people whose voices were too powerful to be safe in their home countries. Within these communities lies a deep well of talent, insight, and creativity that is rarely given the platform it deserves.

Courses are led and supported by acclaimed writers, actors, and artists. Guest facilitators include big-name creatives and experienced mentors from across the industry. Dr Lewis and Dr Mohan, who lead the programme, will guide writers through the process of both elevating their existing work and making new writing.

Participants will leave with:

  • New writing, performance, and storytelling skills

  • Increased confidence and wellbeing

  • Connections with industry professionals and peers

  • Opportunities to publish, perform, and be recognised

More than that, they will become part of a movement: changing the stories Britain tells about migration, identity, and belonging.
